Race Review: Route 66 in Tulsa, OK 11.22.2015

So this past weekend I ran my last half marathon of 2015 - Route 66 in Tulsa, OK. For those keeping score, this was my 8th state in my half-assed attempt to run a half marathon in all 50 states. I'll get there, it just might take me longer than most.

Anyway, my running club, KC Express, had a group of 16 going. Most of us headed down Saturday morning to check into the hotel, hit the race expo, and have a group dinner at 6pm. I drove down with a running friend, Quiet Melissa. We were going to leave somewhat early, but by the time we actually rolled out of town it was 11am. The drive is a solid 4 hours without stops. But of course we had to stop to eat some lunch and stretch our legs. It was 4 o'clock before we actually made it into the hotel lobby.  A quick trip to the check in counter, dropping luggage off in our room, and we were on our way to the expo. The expo itself wasn't that exciting. We grabbed our track jackets and race bibs, looked around a bit, took a silly picture, and were done.

QM (Quiet Melissa) and I ran into a few other KCE members in the hotel and made plans to grab drinks in the hotel bar before dinner. So once again, we dashed to our room to drop stuff off. Along the way we did run into Bart Yasso, and had to get a few selfies with him, and the rest of the runners in the elevator. So yeah, that happened.

Dinner was at Naples Flatbread and Wine Bar in downtown Tulsa, about a half mile from the hotel.

Patti had a great group photo taken

This is our after dinner, before we leave, group selfie!

Race day was Sunday, and while the race didn't start until 8am, we got up early for a KCE group photo in the lobby at 7am. A few didn't make it, but we took what we could get. After that several of us raced up to Maniac Corner for the Marathon Maniac/Half Fanatic group photo.

After messing around with start corrals and whatnot, I finally jumped in corral C and was off. I'd debated if I wanted to run this for time and really go for it, or just have fun. I think my body told me to go for fun as it was the end of my half marathon season, and I was just tired. So I flipped on my kitchen timer (or as some people call it a GymBoss Mini Max) and set myself on cruise control with some run 3, walk 1 groves going.  I felt good, and just took it all in. Each corral was given a nice start with confetti and good music. The first couple of miles went well, and just before mile 5 I ran into this guy.

Mile 5 rolled around shortly after the bull dog, and I was feeling really good. The water stops and volunteers at this race were top notch, so it wasn't hard to find someone willing to take a picture for me.

Mile 9 brought some good times with the Cincinnati block party, or as they like to call it, Sin-cinnati. The neighbors all came together to make Jello shots, have beer, and great photo stations. How could I resist such fun?

Another mile or so into the race brought this cool bridge with the Route 66 sign on it. There was some great photogs out getting some good shots, and then of course, I found more people dressed up. So, why not? Right?

Jumping just for fun while wearing my INKnBURN Christmas sweater and cable knit tights

Of course I took my own Route 66 selfie!

The race was winding down now, and you could feel it. People were walking more, and had tired looks on their faces. With only a few miles left, this is pretty standard. Runners are tired, and while I was too, I wanted to try to keep pushing on.

I managed to finish with a 2:37:07 time. I a little slower than I'd hoped for, but I'm not sad about it. I had a great time while running. I enjoyed seeing Tulsa and it's streets. I had fun stopping for quick pictures. I wouldn't change a thing. I finished, snagged a metal, and had a finishers photo taken.

After the finish, one was shushed into a food tent with spaghetti and sarachi flavored nuts. Odd combination, but what made it even worse was trying to get out of said tent. It was horrible, and I ended up standing there for over 15 minutes. There wasn't much to complain about with this race, but this was one of them. When I finally made it over to Maniac Corner, I switched out my regular race medal for a Half Fanatic one. Sweet!

I was photobombed while trying to take a finisher picture.

Here we are, the Melissas, in all our glory!

Shortly after finishing the race, sitting for a minute, eating some post-race food, and chatting, we headed back to the hotel to clean up and head home. We still had a 4+ hour drive ahead of us, and we were both tired. We hit the road about 1:30, stopped for some interesting Mexican food in Coffeyville, KS, and made it back home by 6:30. Not too bad. Thanks for the fun times Tulsa. You were a great host!

Race Review: Pilgrim Pacer 11.15.2015

This past Sunday I ran the second race of my double half marathon weekend - Pilgrim Pacer on the paved trails of Shawnee Mission Park in Shawnee, KS. It was a beautiful day for race, and the park was just gorgeous with the fall colors. Pilgrim Pacer is put on by the club Trail Nerds, and is pretty well organized. They did have an influx of last minute race entries this year, so not everyone got a medal at the finish line, but Trail Nerds will mail the medals when they arrive. I'm happy to hear the race is growing though as it really is a nice, well supported, out and back race.

Me at the start of the race rocking my INKnBURN Wildflower longsleeve tech and Liberty Capris.

The race starts off with a fairly long downhill - think over a mile. It makes ya feel pretty good to have such a nice, sweet start. I'd decided that I was going to use the 3-1 method for this race since I wasn't pacing! (Run 3 minutes, walk 1 minute.) I set my GymBoss MiniMAX for the intervals and was off. About 5 minutes into the race, I hear a, "Hey Melissa!" over my shoulder and turn to see my friend Lisa (who sells fabulous LuLaRoe clothing) running the race as well. Lisa and I are in a running club together, KC Express, so it was super fun to see a friend out there when I wasn't expecting anyone. Lisa is a solid runner, and can go much faster than I can. When I told her I was running intervals she hummed at the idea a bit, but when my walk time beeped at me, she joined me. And when the run time beeped at my a quick minute later, she thought it wasn't so bad after all.

After the nice downhill start the race levels off and is pretty flat for several miles. There is decent crowd support, and well placed water stops. The race was using HEED and water, and did have some food for fuel as well. I wasn't a big fan of the HEED. It tasted like liquid cotton candy, and smelled just as sweet. It didn't upset my tummy though, so I guess that is a good thing.

See, I can run without jumping.

Ok, jumping is fun too!

The turn-around for this race is at the end of about a half mile uphill climb. It isn't too steep, but it certainly is an up. The race is almost bowl shaped, a down, flat, up, turnaround, and then a down, flat, and an up.

I'm trying to improve my jumps. I've got the side jump, feet back down solid. The 'X' pose is a little hard to nail.

Lisa and I on the trails

Lisa and I ended up running the race together up until mile 12 when she was still feeling it, and I was getting tired and told her to go on and finish. That last mile of up was getting to me, but I didn't give up. I kept her in my sites the entire time and finished about 30 seconds behind her. It was her slowest half, but I had such a great time with her, and am so glad we could run together.

Winner - Winner! Pumpkin pie dinner!

At the end of the race we were rewarded with pumpkin pie and hot chocolate!

Race Review: Longview Half Marathon 11.14.2015

Saturday morning began my double half marathon weekend, my 6th half of the Fall season, and my 38th lifetime half marathon. The race was Longview Half Marathon at Longview Lake in Grandview, MO. With a start time of 8am, and a 30 minute drive plus I still needed to snag my packet, I left the house about 5:45am. (Or as some call it, O-Dark-Thirty.) After some construction on the highway, I finally arrived about 6:30am. I grabbed my packet and headed back to the car to stay warm for a while. It was pretty cold outside, think upper 40s, and I didn't want to just stand around and get cold and stiff.

My last race to suit up as a racer pacer for 2015.

Some of the racer pacers at the start line.

About 15 minutes before the start of the race, I lined up at the 2:55 spot and started to say hello to those around me that would be making the race. I didn't have a huge group with me, but my pacing partner, Layne, and I were ready to have a good time no matter what.

The race started out well. We were supposed to run along Longview Lake, but mostly it was on the roadways by the lake. We could see the lake at times, but it wasn't all that great of a view. If I'm going to run along a lake, I'd rather be on a trail actually close to it, than a road kinda close with just ok views. Just after mile 2 is the race-within-a-race, the King/Queen of the hill event. And an event it is. The hill is pretty darn steep, and long. The race sets up timing mats at the beginning of the hill and at the end, and even if you don't win the race overall, you can still win the King/Queen of the hill. To give you an idea about how fun? this hill is, the winner was 4:35. I did it in 12:07 with the 2:55 pacing group. It is a giant of a hill.  But at the top they take your picture. And it goes a little something like this when you photobomb people.

Jump-photobombing some people!

After the big hill you turn around and go back down it. From there it is a series of little out and backs until mile 6 when you again run a stretch of highway with no lake in site for several miles. Being a cold, windy, and gray day, running on gray highway wasn't that exciting. It also didn't help that I ran by myself quite a bit as the people at my pace were either slower or faster.

Around the 10 mile the course ended up going out over a bridge and we saw lots of the lake then. Lots of the lake wind could also be felt then, but the view was nice. It was short lived though, as back to the gray highway we went for the final two mile stretch into home.

Jumping on the bridge

Finally we made it home. I was able to pull in a few people in the last mile of the race, and had a finish time of 2:54:57. Right on target for the 2:55 pace time.

This race was well supported, organized, had great volunteers, medical support, water stops, and start/finish line. However, it was just boring. A long, cold, windy, gray run. Longview Lake is beautiful, and I love the idea of the location. I even like the King of the Hill game. But this race is just a lot of highway miles. I'm not sure there are trails to run on to try and improve the views.

Race Review - Gobbler Grind half marathon 11.8.2015

I feel like I've been writing a lot of these race reviews lately, and I guess that is because it is Fall racing season here in Kansas City. And I signed up to pace a lot of races, so here come the reviews.

This past Sunday I paced the 2:40 group of the Gobbler Grind half marathon. This is a race that you can either run as a stand alone, or part of a 3 race, 3 weekend series called The Harvest Half 39.3 Series. It was the middle race with the series finishing up this coming weekend at The Pilgrim Pacer. I won't lie, I'm tired. And I'm ready to have a weekend off. I've put in a lot of miles this Fall, but the schedule isn't clear yet. I still have three more halfs before I can call it good.

It was cold at the start, but with an 8:30am race start, at least it wasn't dark. And it really did warm up pretty fast - I think my gloves were off by mile 5. The race started out well. I had several people in my group that I'd paced/ran with last weekend and I was excited to see them return for the series. It was a smaller group than last weekend, but no biggie. I took the tale pacer position again, and headed out. I noticed I started out a little fast, but that tends to happen in the first mile or so when everyone is trying figure out their pace, and are all bunched up. Our group slowed down and tried to find a rhythm. And then I noticed that the mile markers were off - short this time. So when the mile marker said 1, my watch said 0.90. The name of the game is adjust, so my pacing partner Julie and I did.

Around the five mile marker Julie and I caught up to each other for a quick chat. We'd been fast, slow, fast again, and were really going to try and even it out. She went on ahead and I slowed down and walked for a bit, just to try and even things out. The mile markers were really throwing us off, but we did our best, and trusted our Garmins, and went from there.

Indian Creek Trail is really a nice run. It follows along a creek, and is wooded, yet open enough that you never forget you're running in a city. The course is nice, and there was good support and volunteers all along. The water stops were ok. There was no Gaterade to speak of, but I made due just fine as I normally don't use that.

I finished the race at 2:41:38 - perfect for being the trailing pacer. There wasn't a lot of food at the after party, but that's ok. I had some water, a cookie, and some warm broth. I wish more races would provide broth in the colder months. It is a nice change from sweet hot chocolate.

On to next week, and my double for the season. Should be a good time. I hope I get a nap on Saturday!
